microcontrollers. There are also programs where the emphasis of thecourse is on the study of instrumentation and programmable logic controllers. One difficulty in teaching control systems is to provide a good balance between theory and practice. Byincorporating a laboratory component, it could help to provide some connection between the abstractcontrol theory and the real world applications. In the present paper we describe the educational experience gained by including team-based projects intothe control systems course. In these projects students design and implement different controllers forautonomous navigation in a mobile robot. In particular, the design and implementation of three maintypes of controllers are assigned to teams of students, namely: 1) a

, students in this course have been offeredthe option of attending a hands-on library workshop and receiving extra credit on a relatedproject report. Since several hundred students enroll in over 25 sections of this course each fall, the workshop format was developed as an alternative to traditional one-shot library instruction, which is not practicable on this scale. To better assess how the workshops were serving thestudents in these large classes, a group of instructors from the class and the engineering librarianworked together to evaluate student success with research projects and overall informationliteracy within the freshman engineering curriculum. The first initiative was to design a citationstudy assessing submitted projects for quality and

Each module includes an observational labbook, as well as additional questions to reinforce the lesson concepts. All of the projects aredesigned for a standard 40 minute class period, but could be expanded with additional material.Description of Module ProjectsModule #1 – Project #1: Going with the Flow: Students will learn about electron movement, continuous current, switches, and energy transformation through physical activity. thecustomers. Over the course of the project, we designed a polypropylene piece to eliminate shear.Using 3D modeling and molding, we created a prototype of the part. We conducted tests using aprototype and determined that it reduced shear in some materials but didn’t reduce shear in allmaterials.IntroductionThe goal of this project is to fix the problem of product shearing in commercial airlocks. Theairlock designed by K-Tron is a vertically loaded vane pump system and is used primarily tomove small particles between systems of differing pressures. The shear problem is a result ofmaterial becoming caught between the rotating blade of the airlock and its casting. Whenever aparticle is sheared, it destroys some of the product, causes wear on the airlock

A month after his arrival at NASA, the last Apollo mission, Apollo 17, was launched. Obviously, that was exciting, but in terms of his career, the commencement of the Space Shuttle Program in November 1972 was to have far more impact. As a result, Kanipe was able to begin his career working on what he says was the most interesting and exciting project he could possibly imagine: the Space Shuttle. civic partnership [7].To build such a partnership, the AMS facultyapproached the City of Bowling Green to explore potential opportunities for involving studentsin projects that would be mutually beneficial.According to Schuman the history of service-learning in schools of architecture and planning canbe found in the late 1960s where schools emphasized engaging students in the social issues andsupplementing classroom learning with community contact. Due to different circumstancesthrough the years’ service-learning has been more broadly accepted in planning programs than inarchitecture departments. A resurgence of interest in social engagement in professional practiceof architecture and schools can be seen in the late 1990s early 2000. [8
