As an NSF S-STEM award, the SD-FIRST program allowed for 15 scholars in the firstcohort and awarded $5,000 per year, renewable for 4 years, per scholar. During this time, theteam was able to work with the SD Mines Center for Alumni Relations and Advancement(CARA) to secure a donation to the school in the form of a gift of 10 additional scholarshippositions (a total of $5,000 per year, renewable for 4 years, for 10 scholars). With this generousdonation, the SD-FIRST program was able to award scholarships to 25 total students. All 59applications were reviewed by
