and implementation of technical standards. These challenges are expressed intechnical committee meetings, in office rooms after hiring a new engineering intern, and byeducators across engineering disciplines seeking ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineeringand Technology, Inc.). We hypothesize that the technical standards challenges faced by thecollective engineering profession are similar. A survey about the importance of and challengespresented by technical standards was completed by participants (N = 201) from multipledisciples, educational levels, and backgrounds across the United States. This paper analyzes thewritten responses provided in response to the survey (N = 149). Participant responses highlightseven technical standards

The survey was distributed across the engineering field to students, academics, industry employees, and government employees through multiple professionalorganizations and societies. Two hundred and one individuals participated in the survey. Theresults show that the engineering field agrees that (1) technical standards should be taught in theundergraduate engineering curriculum, (2) professors teaching undergraduate engineeringcourses have an acceptable knowledge of technical standards, and (3) four-year academicengineering programs do not put sufficient

The key element in this and in most definitions of GL is thatmaterials are not produced by commercial publishers. One implication of this is that there can bemany different types of GL. Indeed, Schöpfel and Farace reproduce a list of 131 differentdocument types originally compiled by GreyNet International, all of which can “contain uniqueand significant scientific and technical information that is often never published elsewhere” [1].While readers might quibble with some of the types of GL compiled by GreyNet International, this list of 131 types serves to

graduate level. AsTable 2 shows, the rubric total averages for each term did exceed the benchmark, but not by alarge margin. The initial analysis observed differences between the two terms examined. The2022 term had higher averages on several individual rubric items, total rubric score, reportpercentage (grade for final report), and the percentage of graduate students on each team. Thesummer 2021 offering had 14 graduate students of whom 4 were from India, 7 were from China,1 from the Middle East, and 2 from the U.S. In 2022 there were 8 graduate students, with 4 fromIndia, 1 from the Middle East, and 3 from the U.S. Thus, in both terms international graduatestudents made up most of the graduate student population of the course.Table 2

Graduate schoolstypically deploy a mentorship model, where disciplinary experts advise and guide students, preparing them for a career that mirrors their own trajectory into academia [1], [2]. In someSTEM disciplines as many as two thirds of graduate degree recipients leave academia forindustry [3], [4]. Ganapati and Ritchie found that there are gaps in the professional developmentfor PhD students who choose not to pursue a career in academics [5]. Librarians at the University of Iowa created an online video module that allows students totake on the role of “detective” using the method to investigate a fictional lab explosion. Throughgamification, students were able to take an active role in the learning process and have fundiscovering how to use CRAAP [3]. While not all STEM librarians created a game, the variousresearch guides and instructional styles shared by librarians across the country speak to the rolethat CRAAP took on as a leader among resource evaluation tools. Some issues have arisen with the use of CRAAP, especially when used to review informationfound through online sources. intended scope of our study. 3. The lead author, or at least one of the lead authors, needed to be in an engineering department. Subjects such as technical writing for engineers could be written by English faculty, which again puts them outside the scope of what we were examining. 4. The resource had to be written primarily for educational rather than research purposes. Some of the resources in the list were books of original open-access research, with each chapter written by a different author that more closely resembled a series of research papers than a textbook. Though these may have educational value in some circumstances, we decided to exclude these resources from our list as the development process would be

mechanism, which can process data in context and identify “long-distance dependencies between words [3].” Originally designed for translation purposes,Transformer changed the way that AI models intake and analyze information, particularlylanguages. Since 2017, this attention mechanism has revolutionized the way that AI functions, creating smarter technologies that better understand language and context. This led to thecreation of LLMs, which have the capability to process text-based data more accurately and, most importantly, almost instantaneously. Seven years later, Transformer is considered “the bestneural network…at present” and is the foundation for the most powerful language AI toolsavailable today [4]. The boom in AI’s capabilities has

Several studies have reviewed student work with the aim ofguiding collection development decisions [3], [4], [5], [6]. Findings from this research indicatethat students increasingly rely on web resources [7], [8] and that librarians have opportunities todo additional work with students to ensure that they are aware of what is available through thelibrary. Some of these conclusions are also found in the research using STEM students’ citations as ameans of assessing information literacy and library instruction. Researchers found high levels

It is particularlyimportant to focus on discipline specific repositories. Discipline specific repositories are usuallypreferred to generalist repositories (e.g., NIH guidance on how to choose a repository [4])because research

Thispaper describes the survey results conducted at a U15 research institution in Canada askingengineering faculty about their research data sharing practices and preferences. The purpose ofthe survey was to answer the following questions: 1. How well prepared are engineeringresearchers for data deposit, 2. Are engineering researchers willing to share their data, and 3.What barriers exist for sharing engineering data? Results demonstrate knowledge of andacceptance of open access (OA) practices but when it comes to data, engineering researchers aremore reluctant and less prepared to share their data widely and may need guidance on RDM bestpractices

Several studies correlate the quality of a searcher’s mental model of a query with thequality of their search results. Whether the mental models are “robust,” “strong,” or “immature,”researchers have found that the degree of effectiveness or success with search is dependent onthe completeness or maturity of the searchers’ mental models [1], [2], [3]. In addition, there areage-related differences in search mental models that affect how search techniques have evolved[4]. Although different from typical search mental models, Limas calls attention to the effectivestrategies that millennials and Gen Zers have independently developed
