students, depicted in Figure 3 and Figure 4 respectively. BIPOC First-years and BIPOC Juniors also had increases in the total number of withdrawn students, but to a lesser extent. Our distinction shows fewer terms during COVID compared to pre-COVID, so the data demonstrate how the number of total withdrawn students during COVID are already surpassing the number of total withdrawnstudents pre-COVID. By differentiating withdraw totals between student classification andresidential status, the data further detail how withdraw totals have decreased for somepopulations, but have increased for others, demonstrating disparities between the differentpopulations. The increase in withdrawn students from pre-COVID to during COVID forcertain groups could

AbstractIn Designs for the Pluriverse, Arturo Escobar argues that the act of designing involves “muchmore than the creation of objects”; it also produces “diverse forms of life and, often, contrastingnotions of sociability and the world” (2018: 3). In our anthropological fieldwork with AlaskaNative communities that have grappled with housing insecurity issues for multiple generations,we have found this concept to be a reality. As we learned about collaborative housing designpractices in Alaska, we found that socio-material artifacts are useful for engaging with a widerange of critical stakeholders. Alternative design frameworks are needed to address thecomplexity of problems and solutions in remote Alaskan villages, where technological andcultural

Makerspaces have the goal of encouraging underserved youth to express their creativityand learn through a hands-on technology-rich environment [3],[4]. However, there has been littleevidence that these makerspaces provide underserved youth with a sense of ownership andbelonging. Additionally, the engineering field has historically lacked the acknowledgment thatsome engineered projects and designs are harmful to society and have

Males and females both showed slight increases in their probability ofgraduating from high school after participating in PLTW programs5. This study also found thatapproximately 70% of PLTW students transitioned to higher education, while non-PLTWstudents were more likely to transition to 2-year institutions5. Further examination revealed thatalthough the majority of Iowa’s PLTW participants are white males, 20% of PLTW femaleparticipants suggested their numbers mirrored national

YouTube is a video sharing website that can provide free educational tutorials and instructions on technical subject matter, where students can observe practical human-machine interaction to prepare for lectures and increase overall course performance on exams, assignments, and laboratory projects. Our goal was to compare the overall performance as well as the level of active class participation between two groups of the same computer networking course. manifests as unwelcome departmentalclimates [2], social exclusion [3], and sexual harassment [4]. However, we have little knowledgeof how men understand and describe their role in maintaining engineering cultures that privilegemen and masculinity. Further, it is unknown how those men faculty who identify as allies towomen describe the ways in which they tangibly advocate for this population. Although men, as the majority, have great agency in either perpetuating or changing thisnegative culture for women, little research has examined men’s attitudes regarding issues relatedto gender in engineering. Several initiatives have proven to be effective in training and utilizingmen faculty as allies for their women faculty counterparts in STEM [5

This stands in contrast to theinformal, situated forms of engineering observed in rural DR and Haiti, which are shaped bypractical constraints, material reuse, and community-driven innovation. In the Dominican Republic and Haiti, colonial legacies manifest through language hierarchies, systemic inequalities, and limited STEM opportunities for historically marginalizedcommunities. Our research and teaching team draw on Lucena and Alder [2], [3] to critiquedominant engineering narratives and reimagine engineering as a socially and culturally situatedpractice that can empower communities when local knowledge is recognized and valued.Culturally relevant pedagogy, as articulated by

For example, we discussed the difference between individual and group fairnessmeasures, and how the choice to adopt a group fairness measure is better justified from theposition of the tool than from the perspective of the individual. For each example choice webriefly highlighted case studies that emphasized the real-world impact of the technical choicesmade when framing a problem. We ordered the sequence of choices critiqued from the most “internal” or “technical” to the mostcontextually impactful or controversial. Faculty Training on Diversity, Equity, and InclusivityTo cultivate a supportive learning environment for both students and faculty, faculty members mustcomprehend the significance of such an environment and possess a clear understanding of bias [38, 39]. The workshop series comprises nine sessions, addressingcritical topics including the data-informed approach to identify equity gaps, considerations of identity, inclusive communication strategies, course
