This part of the survey was reviewed by experts to enhance validity. Three contentexperts who conduct research in engineering education reviewed the questions, providingfeedback on individual items and the overall structure of the instrument. In addition, tworesearchers with experience in instrument design reviewed the paper and pencil version toprovide structural feedback to improve flow. : Empathy as Generally Outside the Scope of EngineeringDespite the importance of empathy in their personal lives, students saw a limited role forempathy in their engineering work. At a broad level, students attributed this to the stronglytechnical, logical, and analytical nature of engineering work. In each case, the purpose of the Open Sentences exercise should bedirectly reflected in the specific phrasing of the Open Sentence. For example, if the intention isfor students to provide feedback to their team members for a project, a good Open Sentencewould be, “When I reflect upon my experience working with this team, I liked…” This phrasingemphasizes the student’s personal experience and encourages feedback that is more likely to begenerative for team members. In contrast, an Open Sentence such as “What our team did wellis…” is more likely to solicit answers that the student believes are correct, rather than their actualexperience
