. Finally, we pilot the forcebalance in an undergraduate mechanical engineering lab setting and find that students are able toexplore the setup, understand the load cell functionality, and use the system to measure drag on asphere. The force balance enables students to gain hands-on learning experience related to bothfluid mechanics and statics, and our user study shows that the force balance is durable throughclassroom use. The low cost, robustness, and high adaptability of the system makes it suitable forincorporating in multiple labs or for allowing student project teams to utilize the system in theirown experiments.1 IntroductionAccess to a wind tunnel enables students to gain real world experience with fluid dynamicsconcepts. achieved by the most diligent students, but roughly half ofthe student teams do not attain a successful design. There was a perception that no teamssucceeded by luck, but that success came through hard work and effective collaboration.IntroductionThe value of hands-on experimental laboratories for undergraduate engineering students is widelyrecognized [1–6]. The engineering laboratory has become a focal point for students to connectabstract concepts with hands-on practical investigations. Often, students find hands-on laboratoryexperiences to be of greater interest than lecture-based learning [2]. Educators observe them to beof critical importance for the development of professional self-identity among engineeringstudents, with calls being made

development of engineering education curriculum.Education researchers unequivocally identified the importance of incorporating laboratoryexercise in engineering course curriculum design, offering valuable insights to optimize theefficacy of laboratories through several case studies [1–5]. Researchers effectively argue the casefor incorporating practical components into engineering classes, emphasizing the value ofproblem-based or project-based learning (PBL) which aims to bridge theoretical knowledge withreal-world applications [6].Numerous literatures present some innovative designs of hands-on laboratory practice under theengineering course curriculum. learning is well established [1], educational needs havechanged in many ways over the past few years. This is partly due to Covid isolation and itsripple effects, and partly due to a rapidly evolving broader context for how people socialize andaccess, distribute and retain information. A forty-year study from 1976-2017 showed increasedlevels of loneliness and isolation in the 2010’s was strongly correlated with fewer in-personinteractions [2]. Prior to the pandemic a significant portion of college students reported feelinglonely [3]. Students have a deep need for connection [3], which is more pressing in light of theMental Health crisis in the United States which was exacerbated by Covid isolation [4]. Collegestudents have also reported feeling

IntroductionThe lack of strong troubleshooting skills is a common problem in engineering and non-engineering disciplines. Whether it is a technician solving a complex refrigeration problem in asupermarket, or an electrical engineer troubleshooting an op-amp circuit, or an ombudsmantrying to troubleshoot errors in an organizational scheme, or a medical doctor diagnose a disease, troubleshooting is a common skill that is desirable within many disciplines. Troubleshooting is acognitive task that deals with a system in a faulty state and produces operations on themalfunctioning system

underscored the need for accessible respiratory technology in high- andlow-resource settings. For critically ill patients in the US and worldwide, the mechanicalventilator supply was insufficient [1]–[3]. Indeed, the presence of more mechanical ventilators,in addition to therapeutic oxygen, skilled respiration staff, and ICU beds could have reduced the6.8 million COVID related death toll. While governments and private companies attempted tomeet the demand by maximizing the production of new ventilators, troubleshooting and repair ofexisting devices could have also ameliorated the available global supply [1], [2].Our bioengineering curriculum addresses this skill of troubleshooting with an advanced seniorlaboratory course called Troubleshooting for

Escape rooms use the pedagogical viewpoint of the social-constructivist[5], where learning develops as a result of social interaction and collaboration. Participantsconstruct knowledge by interacting with the puzzles, which may, by design, require collaborationwith other participants. The design of escape rooms often encourages collaboration andcommunication because either the puzzles are complex, benefit from multiple perspectives, orperhaps the puzzles require two or more people to physically interact with an object or set ofobjects. People have preconceived notions about the effectiveness of teams based
