…:” Making Meanings of Being a Woman in EngineeringAbstractEngineering is often described as one of the last bastions of a macho culture where womencontinue to experience minority status. In this article we ask, how do women make meaning ofthis status? We explore this question in the context of students‟ socialization into the professionover the course of their engineering education. Drawn from diary data, our findings show thatyoung women hold multiple and contradictory perspectives about their status as women inengineering. The strands of these perspectives are articulated around (a) a feminist critique, (b)gender essentialism, (3) meritocracy and individualism, and (d) exceptionalism. The final products of the students’ designs demonstrate the results of their testing anditeration.Students who completed the first offering of the course were given an open ended surveyregarding their primary takeaway from the course and how the course has influenced their viewsof society and the role of engineers within it. Student responses (n=27 of 35 enrolled students)were qualitatively coded and sorted into broad themes as described below. -disciplinary team project that involves faculty members and students from engineering and non-engineering disciplines. This paper benefits from our experiences with multidisciplinarycollaboration that has helped engineering students build critical thinking, systems approaches,and alternate solution scenarios (Donate et al., 2015, Shankar et al., 2017 a & b). Thesemultidisciplinary teaching alliances have involved professors and students from engineering anddigital arts, and a content field such as urban planning, education, nursing, or business.
