asked the 35 students in thesophomore class the following question, “Based on the books discussed in class, are thereany you plan on reading in the next few months?” 40% replied “yes” and another 40%replied “no”. The remaining 20% answered “maybe.” The students were asked to listspecifics books they plan to read. 13 of the 35 students listed specific titles they plan toread based on the book reports in the class. Conclusion While the self-reported improvement in outside reading by the underclass studentswas significant it represents less than half showing an interested in self directed life-longlearning while still students. The percentage of seniors reading without any specific effortat encourage lifelong learning was higher at 55%. This

likely always result in failure. People at all levels of the organization need to becomfortable with the emphasis on quality and accept as well as understand the anticipatedbenefits from its employment. The challenge then is to get everybody on the quality bandwagonworking together to reach the organization’s TQM expectations, objectives, and goals.Reinventing OrganizationsThe process of reinventing organizations has become more than just a buzzword. The quest fornew and improved methods, strategic planning, and results oriented performance measurementsare on the rise. The implementation of Total Quality Management is one of these reforms. In

. Jill Clough, Ph.D. University of Wisconsin-PlattevilleIntroductionWhen faculty members throw conventional practice to the wind for an entirelyunexpected pedagogy, it is not done lightly! Perhaps unadvisedly, but not lightly.Abandoning the comfort of usual classroom pedagogical customs is fraught with perilwhen student evaluation constitutes 40 – 60% of the professor’s annual assessment. However, in an effort to bring greater realism to the Engineering Management class andto make the class structure itself an instrument of instruction, the authors have takenactive learning to the basics. In Fall of 2001, the Engineering Management course went as planned and the students atthe University of Wisconsin-Platteville covered

Faculty experienced inteaching in face-to-face environments are accustomed to owning their own course material, butin the distance education environment, the courses are typically “owned” by the university 9, 26.Some take the approach that ownership is shared—faculty owns the courseware and theuniversity owns the instructional design aspects 25.In addition to course development, workloads also increase as faculty respond to students ingroups and on a one-to-one basis online, and interact with other departments involved in thecourse 26, 25. Workload issues can be addressed by setting standards, providing guidance, using acomputer-based classroom management system, planning courses with the

systems of both technology andpeople. In TOM, the emphasis is on development of both theory and software to enableorganizations to manage large collections of data in a way that preserves and enhances theinformation and knowledge that data represents, as well as enabling people in an organization toretrieve that information in a timely and comprehensible way, in areas from manufacturing tosales to services, and across the enterprise functions of analysis, planning and operations. Insummary, the domain of the TIM program is: 1) the management of technology and innovation, with emphasis on analytic approaches to complex problems whose solutions have bothtechnological and financial components, and 2) the development of technology of

. The foundation developed a plan to invest all their capital in a shortperiod of time making substantial grants to thirty new biomedical engineering departmentsthroughout the U.S. in a major way so that they could afford to hire faculty and build the neededfacilities. They also provided funding to almost 1,500 young researchers to help them start theircareers in biomedical engineering.6 Since 1989, seventy-five institutions have received giftsfrom $750,000 to $18 million toward their biomedical engineering programs. This contributedto the rapid rise in biomedical engineering programs during the five year period between 1995and 2000. During this five year period, the number of biomedical engineering programs doubledfrom approximately twenty

programs1. As the value of theseprograms became apparent, their number began to increase rapidly.Engineering Management, as a discipline, evolved from the need to provide a link between themanagers and engineers of all types. A quick review of master program descriptions describesEM programs as providing a strong engineering core with additional studies in management, technology and business related courses. Hicks et. al.2 classified Engineering Managementmasters programs into three groups. One group focused on traditional management concepts suchas planning, marketing, accounting, etc. The second group focused on mathematical conceptsincluding operations research, probabilistic models, and risk/decision analysis, etc. and the thirdone focused on

One particular group of students strongly affected bythis requirement is the Corp of Engineer Army Captains at Fort Leonard Wood.2 Theseindividuals, if they meet admission requirements, are able to complete the MSEM degreewhile they are at the fort for career training. Many of these individuals are now coming tothis program straight from war zones in Iraq or Afghanistan, making it very difficult toprepare for and take the GRE. Overall, some potential students have simply said theywould not take the exam and planned to look elsewhere for their graduate education. These individuals are often indignant that as successful professional

2005confirmed this trend. The use of BPR as a management tool was reported to have gone downfrom 69 percent in 1995 to 38 percent in 2000, and revived again to 61 percent in 20041.The concept of reengineering traces its origins back to management theories developed as earlyas the nineteenth century. BPR integrates methods from total quality management, technologyand innovation management, strategic planning, systems engineering, and organizational design4.The Stevens EM program has been offering courses related to these topics and integrating BPRin the curriculum was only natural. It aimed to provide our students an understanding of theBPR as a concept, learning of the tools and techniques and the ability to find similarities anddifferences between

As an Acting Dean ofthe College housing the Engineering Department, she successfully identified ways to establishinternet exchanges with countries that lacked direct satellite uplinks. According to7, IT managers have a great deal of difficulties adapting tothe ever changing technologies in order to stay compatible with the global market. According to 8network systems by themselves do not make decisions; however, they provide tools to collect, maintain, and help provide solutions. That put a burden on network engineers and administratorsto plan and install networks that are capable of providing such solution is a secure and error freeenvironment.Such challenges have placed more pressure on

Using the Steps for Better Thinking Model2 as the developmental umbrella, allcurricular elements are strategically placed within the curriculum to provide both an integrativethread between the major components as well as a developmental thread for improving complexthinking skills. The primary role of the technology enabled support modules is to provide thefoundational scaffolding necessary to develop more complex reasoning while simultaneouslyattempting to address alternative learning styles. To develop this more fully, it is first necessary

Engineering management is a discipline in its own right as can be seen by the number ofengineering schools that offer a degree. The ABET website shows that there are eight accreditedundergraduate programs in the U.S. and one accredited graduate program. Besides these, thereare many more graduate programs not listed by ABET including an MS EngineeringManagement degree offered at National University. Furthermore, the discipline of engineeringmanagement is highly related to systems engineering. Kotnour and Farr2 list four definitions of

In addition, as Farr (1996) stated organizational influences such as global andincreased competition are forcing junior engineers into more managerial and leadership roles. Therefore, in order to get hired and later on get promoted, today’s engineers need to have goodleadership skills.
