There is little comfort in explaining to students that real engineering problems do not come with cookbook instructions. 3. Making the experimental apparatus “interesting” or “practically relevant” does not fully compensate for the student discomfort at being confronted with a task that they feel unprepared to successfully complete. 4. The post-lab surveys did not clearly tell the student to limit their answer to the inquiry- based experiments. This error in our instrument caused many students to report on their experience with both types of experiments in mind. The next version of our instrument will correct
