Starting with theELCIR 2018 cohort, TAMUS LSAMP offered participant research stipends to students whoconducted research with a faculty mentor after the completion of their ELCIR experience.Several modifications were made in the program administration to improve participants’experiences: • ELCIR 2016 cohort: The ELCIR experience was offered as a 1-hour credit course for participants in the Spring semester before leaving for the hands-on experience in Mexico. To increase cultural interactions, participants stayed with host families while in Mexico. The research was hosted by the Universidad Marista [5]. • ELCIR 2017 cohort: In addition to the

meant to be interpreted and used for a given context (i.e., “situated” [5]).The connections between the components are also complex and dynamic.SEVT has been useful in predicting both small-scale decisions, such as whether or not to engage inan in-class activity, and broad-scale decisions, such as persistence in an academic major. Perez etal. (2019 [13]), for example, identified three different latent SEVT profiles and examined achieve-ment and course completion in STEM at the end of the first year of college. They found firstthat students with below-average competence beliefs and task values and above-average perceivedcosts were the least likely to be retained in STEM. Specifically, women only held 16.2% of positionsin engineering occupations in 2019, while Hispanic/Latino engineers only held 8.3% of positionsand Black or African American engineers only held 4.0% of positions [3]. Further, the recentgrowth of engineering bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanic/Latino graduates has not matchedtheir overall population growth in the last decade [4]. Outreach programs with designed curricula can be implemented to provide engineeringcontent to students, particularly when teachers have limited training in engineering pedagogy [5].Such programs are frequently organized by engineering faculty, students
