University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) was redesignedfor the Fall 2022 semester to improve student engagement and retention in the engineering program. The course design centered around an individual design project, with supporting modules to preparestudents for the project. Student feedback (in the form of student reflections) provided insight intohow students interacted with the project. Despite being an individual project, many students describedcommunity building that occurred through collaboration. Students also described a sense ofaccomplishment from completing a difficult, open-ended design problem. The redesigned course hasbeen offered in two semesters (Fall 2022, Fall 2023), and the retention rates for students enrolled inthese courses

to encourage class attendance, yet this oftenmakes enemies of a few students who believe the instructor is being lazy. Currently the strategy is tomake the problems available at the beginning of the semester since class attendance is voluntary andthis tends to minimize student complaints.During the 2022-23 academic year, some classes had mandatory attendance using the “University’s“Instructor Initiated Drop policy”. This policy allowed the instructor to drop any student whoexceeded either the absence (4 times) or missed assignment (3 sets) limits, stated in the course Proceedings of the 2024 ASEE Gulf-Southwest Annual Conference West Texas A&M University, Canyon, TX

The work noted that additional support resources such as graded examples orrubrics would be a key asset to help more instructors incorporate additional writing content. In the Fall 2022 semester, the course instructors introduced the robust 360-degree feedback conceptto the Junior Design Course (the first of a two-course Design sequence). This was just one ofseveral changes to this course in Fall 2022, aimed at providing additional structure to the assignmentinstructions and overall expectations of students (both from a team and individual perspective). Engineering faculty organized national conference panel discussionsto help their communities understand the impacts of ChatGPT [1]. Concerns about ScholasticDishonesty (SD) as well as optimism about the possibilities of increased student learning are beingdiscussed [4]. SD concerns are widely anticipated where AI tools can write sections of reports so thattraditional plagiarism detectors will not flag the work [5]. The potential negative impact of AI-assistedwriting is more widely recognized than the potential positive impacts. Positive impacts are

. IntroductionInstitutions of higher education have long sought ways to meet the needs of the workforce.Research shows that there is a shortage of qualified STEM graduates in the workforce.1, 2, 3 Researchfrom the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (2022) indicates that K-12 studentsare not well-prepared to enter into STEM degrees. This is likely one factor in the lack of STEMgraduates from 4-year institutions. Due to this lack of entry into the pipeline to STEM careers, thosethat choose this path need to continue to graduation. Studies show that there is more attrition inSTEM fields than in other fields.5A challenge faced by the majority of institutions of higher education is student retention. Typicalmodels that institutions of higher
