c American Society for Engineering Education, 2011 Providing International Experience through Studying Abroad for Engineering Technology StudentsIn 2004 we began an investigation to provide international experience for engineeringtechnology students at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) thatwas currently not available. The original plan was to have a small group of students go toKuala Lumpur, Malaysia for six weeks to study with Malaysian students in a projectorientated course. This was planned for the summer of 2005. The project was actuallycompleted for the first time during 2006, and repeated again in 2007. A group of fourstudents from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology

In 2007 North Carolina State University conducted a Study Abroad program withZhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. Its purpose was to begin the development of arelationship to promote student exchange and faculty interaction. The plan for this six-weekprogram was to have NCSU students (1) enroll in six hours of credit that would be taught byaccompanying faculty and (2) engage in tours, cultural events, industry visits and social activitieswith Chinese

), they discoveredthat more specific objectives should have been identified during the initial planning. Theuniversity students had to use their best judgment to identify specific learning objectives butwithout knowing the Dominican students and their prior educational experiences and levels ofunderstanding many of the objectives had to be modified during the actual teaching process.Another challenge was translation of materials. Five of the university students had significantexperience speaking Spanish (three of the students had limited Spanish speaking abilities). Eventhough fluent in speaking Spanish, translating the lessons, especially technical terms, proved tobe difficult for the university students. To avoid potential confusion, the

Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES)invited the OECD Directorate for Education to evaluate the performance of tertiary education inPortugal 11. The review found that there was no “formal strategic higher education planning ineffect at either the national level or the institutional level,” and that Portugal should take steps to“build excellence” and better integrate the “the tertiary sector in the economic, social andregional life of the country.” Finally, the report emphasized that the main point of reference forPortugal continues international, and mainly to be “whether Portugal is performing well incomparison to its European partners.”In 2006, the Portuguese government launched the MIT Portugal Program (MPP) as

Tech and Purdue University are especially relevant given their focus onengineering students.12,13 Researchers at both schools found higher levels of sensitivity forwomen as compared to men, and tentatively indicated that students entering global programs (theInternational Plan at Georgia Tech and GEARE program at Purdue) had higher IDI scores.IDI has also been used to study changes in intercultural development resulting from globaleducational experiences. The Georgetown Consortium study, for example, used data from 1,300students in 61 different programs to show that the largest pre/post increases in IDI scores couldbe found among students in study abroad programs that were 13-18 weeks duration and/or verywell structured and planned.14 However

Once overseas, will the trip go according to plan or willwe have to overcome further hurdles? The intent of this paper is to describe the various learningexperiences of one particular student while involved in a global engineering project. By keepinga photo journal, I was able to capture significant learning moments in the experience that myproject leader might not have anticipated. For example, while our goal was to build a filter toprovide potable water, I discovered that while the filter provided clean water, more importantly itcreated extra time for the locals to

Such short sessions provide students with anopportunity for a greater role in planning their total program. Students have the chance to enrichtheir course of study, reduce the overall time spent in school, and decrease their regular courseload by careful selection of such short-term courses. The ECTSis an important part of this overall effort since its intent is to allow students to transfer creditsamong the diverse universities in different European countries. The countries involved in theEHEA are not limited to, nor all-inclusive of, member countries of the European Union (EU).The process leading to the ECTS has been reasonably well accepted by European systems. Asnoted by the European Students Union (1), “The three-cycle system (bachelor, master, anddoctoral degrees) and the ECTS are among the prime examples of successes of the BolognaProcess…”One significant

to process information and absorb knowledge. This is also determined by relationshipbetween an instructor and a learner as well as relationship among learners. The solution lies in creating a learner-centered community that encourages students to assumemore of the learning responsibility. Now roles of an instructor and a learner vary in thisrelationship. An instructor is no longer a mere transmitter of knowledge. In this learningenvironment a learner is not entirely dependent on what the instructor says or does. A learner hasjust become an educator rather a recipient. The learner is assisted in becoming autonomous andbeing able to plan his/her learning. On the other hand, a learner can play more active role inanother learner’s learning as an

recommendations for theintegration of global experiences in engineering education 6. At the conference, engineering educators were chided by industry executives for their slowness in preparingengineers for a career in an increasingly globalized workplace. The summit resulted inrecommending a number of strategies such as mandatory language competence, studentand faculty exchanges, as well as students working a semester abroad.U.S. universities must become more involved in international exchanges. We owe it to allour stakeholders and especially to our students. The process is arduous but highlyrewarding. Anticipating problems and planning can prevent or diminish roadblocks tosuccessful exchanges. The authors hope this paper may prove useful to our
