that will calculate some particular “right” value, but to develop a model that is useful forboth understanding how the market views a company and to perform what-if analysis todetermine the effect of company strategies or economic news on the stock price. For instance themodel we built in the late 1980’s allowed us to calculate the effect that a “poison pill” take-overdefense (Cody, 2011) would have on Unocal’s stock price. This same model was used todetermine the change in the stock price with various methods of refinancing the large debtincurred after the defense.
