Since renewable energy is a relevantand multidisciplinary field, it provides a good topic for a first-year engineering design course,provided the experience is properly designed.This paper describes a successful renewable energy project that has been used for the past sevenyears in an Introduction to Engineering class at a large, public, research university. Details ofthis project and its evolution based on the curricular needs of the university and research-basedbest-practices will be discussed. Some of these research-based best practices
