industrysponsored. Student teams face challenges when defining objectives for an ambiguous project,controlling scope creep, achieving buy-in, and selling their results to the sponsor. These areskills that are not taught in most engineering curriculums prior to the capstone course(s). Ourobservations are consistent with the observations by other researchers who have studied thedesign process. Wilson et. al 2 highlighted how students in the capstone course setting strugglewith setting milestones and soliciting feedback at the right times. Developing and effectivelycommunicating the project plan and status are critical to the success of the project. As noted byYildirim3, there is a need for understanding the relationships between design activities

the engineering economy coursedid a good job of teaching them how to plan for retirement.The breakdown of the economics courses taken by the 105 students responding was: 52microeconomics, 31 macroeconomics, and 22 both micro and macroeconomics. All 105 studentssaid that the engineering economy course was more valuable than the economics course(s) theypreviously completed. In fact, 93.3% of the students (98 out of 105) felt as though every student(non-engineering and engineering) should take a course like this engineering economy course.Over 87% of the students (92 out of 105) said they felt as though a course like the engineeringeconomy course would be a good course to offer as a General Education (Social and BehavioralSciences at Penn State

Most students were able to identify potential moral or ethicalproblems and were also able to draw appropriate connections between personal morals, the Codeof Ethics for Engineers, and the situations described in the cases. Not surprisingly, studentsoften took strong positions surrounding the central issue(s) in the cases. The main difficultystudents had with was articulating a counter perspective when they perceived a clear ethicalproblem.The papers were evaluated using a scoring rubric in which points were awarded for addressingthe guiding questions (10 points), quality of writing (5 points), and how well they justified theirfinal position on the case (5 points). Problems of copying and inappropriate collaboration still exist, butnonetheless this approach’s monitoring and feedback generally are helpful. A difficulty is thatfeedback is limited to only the selected problem(s) and to the degree that the professor expendstime writing comments on the homework.Students still seek help with homework during professors’ office hours, but that practice hastended to evolve to the posting of solutions. Factors affecting both professors and students havecontributed to this trend. Professors spend more time conducting research and raising funds, andstudents’ jobs can make it difficult to use office hours. Postings can occur
