systems. In addition to these two primary thrusts, complimentaryresearch is also conducted when appropriate and productive. Typically, these involveopportunities to advance membrane applications for important classes of practical problems, andto understand related environmental implications of membranes. The heart of the PERMEANT project involves individual student projects designed withcollaborative links between projects and with foreign institutions. Students conduct much oftheir research as they would with any other laboratory-based project. A key difference is thattheir projects are designed around teams involving US and international co-advisors, studentsfrom both countries, and a study design based some activities being carried out in the

students come to their colleges with different motivations, goals, plans, attitudes, and expectations. College study requires them to complete all their assignments to reach all thegoals with no requirement compromised. As a part of college study courses with computer labassignments usually provide instructors with a unique opportunity to motivate students to workhard to achieve their goals and to sustain their knowledge as well as to measure student learningoutcomes on this matter. Research finds it is still difficult to predict or measure how muchstudents are able to sustain their learning outcomes before their graduations. This research aimsto first ensure that all student lab activities and exercises are designed to not only for them

New courses and programs are being developed to expandthe offerings during each of these time periods. This paper discusses: (1) the current options available to the students as well as those that arebeing considered or developed, (2) the research we have conducted to better understand theissues, and (3) the evolving strategy the college is using to get as many engineering students aspossible some international experience before they graduate. We view the purpose of this paperas a vehicle to share our experiences, as well as a basis for discussion to learn

University is a strong proponent ofexperiential learning, a “bottom-up” method in which general lessons and principles are learnedthrough direct personal experiences and observations. Active modes of learning can enrich, broaden and deepen the knowledge base, which is gained from readings and class lectures1,2,3.The system used at Rowan is called Engineering Clinics. This is an eight semester project basedseries of courses which are a requirement of all engineering students for graduation. It can beseen in the following sections that experiential learning is a hallmark of Rowan’s engineeringcurriculum, which will be utilized for these projects. Professionalism and “Real-Life”engineering practices are emphasized in a multidisciplinary environment

This may bedue to the fact that a large number of our research subjects had prior experience living abroad,and/or were opting into courses and programs with an explicit global/international focus.Second, we found that students who spent two or more months living abroad had significantlyhigher scores for all dimensions of Cultural Intelligence. This finding is similar to results fromother studies. highlights of a recent survey that was conducted to bettercharacterize the current state of international opportunities for engineering students, includingthe trends, general themes, and major exceptions.1 IntroductionThe value of an international cognizance, in the context of engineering education, has been thesubject of much research. A recent study, In Search of Global Engineering Excellence1,summarizes the large majority of these findings: The ability to live and work in a global community is — today — an important requirement for engineering graduates. They need to have broad engineering skills and know-how, and to be flexible and mobile, and able to work internationally.Regrettably, the fulfillment of this international

] in Australia, there wereserious issues regarding the low motivation students had to interact with academics, which had an impact ontheir morale. Furthermore, student/staff ratios were very high; hence there was no capacity for any effort fromthe academics. Some academics felt that undergraduates were unmotivated and that there was no value toengaging with them outside the classroom environment. In order to find ways to address these problems, andprovide students with a space to develop sense of belonging and engage with their peers through a co-curricularexperience, the School of Civil Engineering in 2015 developed the Icarus program. Icarus is a voluntary,project-based, research program where students engage with peers in small projects
