paperaccepted by the Minorities in Engineering Division of the 2021 ASEE annual conference (areference with the title and author details will be provided). For this specific project, theretention rate of the participants was 100%, higher than that of all freshman and sophomorestudents in CBAS, which is 69.1% from Fall 2019 to Fall 2020. As the delivery method of mostcourses offered by MTSU switched to Remote, Online, or Web-assisted in Fall 2020, manystudents had financial difficulties, mental health related issues, and difficulty adjusting to thenew learning methods. As a result, there was a significant negative impact to the students’ GPAin Fall 2020, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, we did not see an improvementover the participants’ GPA

ofrelationships with our data in recently published articles. Qualitative research has become morecommonplace and valued in engineering education in recent years. However, some tensions areapparent within qualitative research as some people within our community (researchers andconsumers of our research) are more positivist leaning while others embrace more constructivist, postmodern, and critical ways of engaging as researchers. The purpose of this paper is toconsider some of these tensions in our community through considering researchers relationshipsand use of data in journal publications. The research question guiding this study was: Through ananalysis of qualitative, engineering education manuscripts published in 2019, what is ourrelationship with

The full effects of inflation in theUnited States might be benchmarked by mortgage rates which are expected to rise to nearly 8%by the end of 2023, up from 4% in 2019 [4]. In 2022, President Biden’s attempt to forgivestudent debt increased awareness about the high costs of a university degree. 2-credit hour manufacturing science course was required for mechanicalengineering students and offered during the spring semester of senior year. Recent curriculumchanges shifted the course to the fall semester of junior year. This resulted in one academic yearwhen the course was offered twice: once to juniors in the fall and then again to seniors during thespring. Overall, this study tracked students across two years (2019-20 and 2020-21) and threeofferings of the course (Tab. 1). Enrollment for Spring ‘20 was much higher due to anexceptionally large senior cohort. Table 1: Student enrollment in the manufacturing science course Academic year: 2019-2020 2020-21 Semester

Using the ASEE Annual Conference proceedings as an example [24],the number of papers identified that included the term “social justice” increased steadily from 49in 2015 (2.7% of the papers) to 117 in 2019 (6.6% of the papers), with a drop to 82 in 2020(4.6% of the papers, perhaps due in part to the ~20 SJ papers presented at the ASEE CoNECDconference in 2018 and 2019). The divisions publishing the most papers that included SJ wereLiberal Education / Engineering & Society (n=91; 30%), Educational Research & Methods(n=53; 7%), Engineering Ethics (n=45; 26%), Community Engagement (n=30; 19%), andMinorities in Engineering (n=29; 14%). The surveys gatheredbiographical data, prior experience with design and fabrication, whether or not they had seen thecampus workshop facilities before, and three self-efficacy measures towards design andfabrication. The same self-efficacy measures had been collected the prior year from the then firstyear engineering students, upon starting their semester in-person in 2019.It should be noted that key among the changes effected by the university with the onset of thepandemic was the development of a new suite of courses, titled the First Year

Engineering Education, 2023Work in Progress: Towards a participatory action research approach to improverepresentation of Black Ph.D.s in engineeringAbstractThis work-in-progress introduces a conceived participatory action research approach to improverepresentation and support for Black Ph.D.s in engineering. In 2019, only 3.9% of doctoralengineering degrees were awarded to Black students (ASEE, 2020), thereby affecting who goeson to become future faculty members, leaders, and role models (Burt et al., 2019). Most researchon broadening participation in engineering has focused on undergraduate education with relativelylimited work on graduate populations (Burt et al., 2018).
