productive, as it fostersadaptability while ensuring structure. However, for undergraduate students transitioning from astructured K-12 system to an open academic setting, a structured pathway to student successbecomes essential. Without clear guidance, excessive freedom may lead to distractions, impacting learning and retention. By integrating flexible learning pathways, education canmaintain academic rigor while allowing adaptive approaches that support student success acrossvaried learning needs [4].Figure 1: Challenges in Conventional Education (Courtesy: National Center for Education Statistics -2022)The pie chart titled "Challenges in Conventional Education in the USA" illustrates four keyissues that impact traditional educational models: 1

Some students filled out the survey later in the term, and in some cases noted thattheir questions had already been asked and answered. The questions in this survey, as it currentlyexists with the additional question, are included in the Appendix. instance, Utah State University [7] implemented a statewide faculty-to-studentmentoring program that led to a persistence rate of 78.57% among participants from fall 2021 tofall 2022, compared to 65.22% for a control group. This represents a 13.35 percentage pointincrease attributed to the mentoring program. Similarly, Oregon State University [8] piloted afaculty-student mentor program targeting underrepresented, first-generation, and Pell-eligiblefirst-year students. Data from other universities suggest that such programs can reduce dropoutrates by as much as half, indicating the potential effectiveness of faculty-led mentorship inimproving retention. These examples illustrate the positive impact of transitioning from traditional student

classroom settings. Unlike conventional coursework, whichtypically emphasizes theoretical knowledge, REUs immerse students in the practical aspects ofscientific research (Kim et al., 2011; Kelley et al., 2019). This experiential learning approach notonly enhances students' understanding of scientific processes but also cultivates critical thinkingand problem-solving skills that are invaluable in real-world applications (Kolon & Mabrouk,2022). By participating in research, students can clarify their career goals and gain insights intothe nature of scientific work, which can significantly influence their academic trajectories (Kolon& Mabrouk, 2022; Bosman et al., 2023). Moreover, the collaborative nature of REU programsfosters a sense of

work seems to provide better motivation for students to prepare for classthan a quiz and avoiding other homework gives students ample opportunity to watch the pre-class videos. Implementing flipped learning in a course could provide students with theopportunity to deepen their understanding of the topic, increase their collaboration skills, andbuild self-regulation, but if the implementation is not successful, it could be a miserableexperience for both the students and the instructor. It is my hope that this paper helps instructorswho developing a flipped class.References[1] C. Gopalan, S. Daughrity, and E. Hackmann, “The past, the present, and the future offlipped teaching,” Adv. The MAP evaluates a student's growth orfixed mindset, while Grit assesses their passion and persistence in achieving long-termobjectives. We predict that students with higher grit and mindset scores will display morefavorable attitudes toward science and mathematics.Preliminary results show that students' mindset scores remained relatively unchangedthroughout the program. However, grit scores

that the load of work is similar for each group.During the academic year 2021-2022 for example, the students were asked to design a semi-automatic system to make fired briquets. The problem is divided into small problems and eachgroup explores on one of them: the first group researched on raw material, i.e. clay; the secondgroup was destined to study different ways to sift clay, the third group had the design of themechanical system, the fourth had to study the electrical circuits for semi-automatic functioning, the fifth was in-charge of the settings for security, the sixth had to suggest the maintenance of thesystem with a user manual and the seventh had to look at the ergonomics of the all system.Step 2 - Study and Research: students are
