Engineering Education, 2025 Impact of an Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Project on First Year StudentsAbstractIncreasing student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)continues to be of significant importance in order to satisfy the increasing demand forprofessionals in these fields. The First Year Scholars program at Kennesaw State University(KSU) aims to introduce first-year students to the undergraduate research experience. Studentsare encouraged to apply for projects they find interesting, regardless of whether the projects arein their majors. This program helps students gain early research experience, which sets them on apath for future success. In this study, an

ofdesign processes, but often require additional program resources.1. IntroductionIn the 21st century, product lifecycle management (PLM) initiatives swept the engineering industry, with more companies transitioning to digital collaborative design methods over existingengineering design strategies, where a company would keep an on-site design file storage systemthat includes hand drawings and requirement documents. With enterprises realizing the advantagesof PLM systems and how they impact their organizational structure and capabilities, engineeringdesign processes have changed dramatically, from a traditionally closed environment toincorporating multiple departments into a collaborative design space. The shift in mindset towardsa collaborative

translating these customerrequirements into technical requirements or engineering specifications in the early stages ofdesign [5], [8], [9], [10]. Holistically, QFD is a multi-phase process that spans the entire designprocess. The initial House of Quality is the first phase of this process and is most commonlyused in undergraduate design courses [11], [12]. The subsequent matrices correlate the initialcustomer requirements to engineering specifications, product characteristics, manufacturingprocesses, and quality control [5], [13].Previous efforts incorporated one of the subsequent phases of QFD into a Capstone Course. These efforts suggested that the use of additional phases of QFD could influence requirementsevolution and management within a

One such OER is MyOpenMath, a mathematics based online tool that integrates intocommon learning management systems and is free for both faculty and students. In this paperwe discuss how this tool is currently implemented in a senior capstone design course and a unitoperations laboratory in chemical engineering. This presentation includes characteristics ofMyOpenMath, benefits for instructors, available instructor training, and benefits over usingcurrent quizzes in the Canvas LMS. Not limited to chemical engineering courses, MyOpenMathis applicable to any equation based course. This paper focuses on the faculty

The authors propose integrating MACC content toalign engineering education with the climate crisis, highlighting the urgency for climate-conscious engineering programs. This paper expands the toolbox of pedagogical approachestowards applying climate concepts into Civil Engineering courses. Finally, backward design hasrecently been recommended as an appropriate structure for enhancing climate literacy [8]. These challenges aimed to call engineers to solve wicked problems such as making solarenergy economical, manage the nitrogen cycle, and provide access to clean water throughengineering achievements. However, a great engineering achievement does not always lead tothe implementation and appropriate usage of technology or product. For example, manytechnology advances focused on agriculture (i.e. nitrogen recovery) have been over the

A few examples of EdTech includeonline platforms [14], [15], computational tools [2], and devices that streamline instructionaldelivery [14], [16], [17] or increase engagement [14] - [17]. For instance, online platforms suchas cloud-based virtual labs have been used in STEM education to enable students to engage inremote experiments and interactive learning environments [14]. Computational tools encompassboth specialized simulation and design software, such as ASPEN for chemical engineering andSPICE for electrical engineering, as well as more general-purpose tools like MATLAB andCOMSOL, which are widely used for numerical computing and analysis. A study [5] showed thatstudents with higher attendance rates performed better in laboratory components of the course, suggesting that attendance facilitated the acquisition of practical skills essential for the field.Several factors can impact attendance rates, including student motivation, course design, andexternal commitments. Studies have shown that flexible course delivery methods, such as hybridmodels, can improve attendance by accommodating diverse student needs [6]. Despite the clearlink between attendance and performance, some studies have faced challenges such as self-reporting bias in
