White, Queen’s University c American Society for Engineering Education, 2017 The History of the Engineering Libraries Division, Part 2: 1960-2017IntroductionThe Engineering Libraries Division (ELD) of the American Society for Engineering Education(ASEE) is one of the oldest professional communities of engineering and technical librarians inthe world. It is also one of the few engineering organizations where librarians and professors arerecognized as academic professionals. First organized as a regional committee in 1941

committee reports. TheBulletin of the SPEE, SPEE’s official journal from 1910 forward, and its successor, the Journalof Engineering Education (JEE), are excellent sources of information. The SPEE/ASEEYearbook, which was published as a supplement to JEE contains lists of members, statistics andcommittee information. The Proceedings of the American Library Association also contain muchinformation of interest, especially during the period 1900-1915. The ALA and SPEE proceedingsare especially valuable because they include transcripts of discussions that followed the readingof papers.3. The Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education (SPEE)SPEE was founded in 1893 during the International Congress on Engineering, which was heldJuly 31 through

This study is based onbibliometric analysis and includes the use of visualization techniques with Sci2 Tool software.Although it is recognized that publishing policies for the Proceedings by the ELD Division andASEE have changed throughout the years, this study aims to present an analysis of the paperspublished during this period.IntroductionThe inception of engineering librarianship was determined by the evolution of the engineeringeducation field, the expansion of technical information resources and the increased demand forspecialized information.1 Engineering librarians have progressed from mere clerks to experts inthe use of specialized information resources and collaborators in the education of

In 2010, librarians on-boarded a research guide, via LibGuides, to provide continuityacross sections and easy access to the resources discussed in face-to-face sessions. In 2014,short video tutorials were also created when this course began offering sections online. The large, asynchronous online class revealed areas in course design that failed to translatesuccessfully from the traditional classroom to a digital platform, particularly in the area ofinformation literacy. In 2017, a team of five librarians entered into a partnership with theUniversity Writing Program (UWP) to improve information

diversity and inclusion in one-shot information literacy classesIntroduction Many academic departments in higher educational institutions rely on their libraries tooffer Information literacy (IL) classes. Librarians typically design the content of their IL classesin consultation with the teaching faculty members. The content may include topics on avoidingplagiarism, strategies for reading a technical paper, finding relevant resources, evaluation ofinformation sources, and general library orientations [1]. These sessions can be taughtsynchronously and asynchronously. Regardless of the content and discourse platform, these ILclasses are typically one-shot classes that are forty-five to ninety minutes long. As

(Examples might include class and lab activities, assessments, particular learning methods, and resources.) 2. As a result of your work in this class, what gains did you make in your understanding of each of the following? (Instructors insert those concepts that they consider most important.) 3. As a result of your work in this class, what gains did you make in the following skills? [3].Additionally, researchers have found that as much as 65% of students have skipped buying orrenting a textbook for a course because of the cost even when nearly all (94%) of those studentsthought it hurt their grades in the course [4]. OER has the potential to not only save studentsmoney, but also help ensure equal access to course materials leading to higher rates of studentsuccess across the board. In addition to eliminating textbook or other course materials costs for students, OER can also berepurposed, remixed, and updated continuously. This gives instructors full control over thelearning resources they make available to the class, giving each instructor the opportunity to tunethe resources they use to their specific audience and

expertise should include Engineering MOOCs from universities such as MIT and Berkeley. Watching just a few videos can greatly deepen a librarian’s appreciation and familiarity with engineering topics in the area of support. There are also several new librarianship MOOCs available [6]. • Professional organizations and governing bodies such as American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and ASTM International also have online training on engineering specific formats such as technical reports and standards. [7]. For example, IEEE’s Standards University [8] offers a treasure-trove of videos, articles, tutorials and a free e- magazine on the importance and use of standards across the engineering

For the workshops and other shorter instruction sessions, instructors are chosen for thetopic that is being taught. There are even cases of the material being made available online via aYouTube. So, not only are the types of instruction variable, there are also multiple methodsinstructors can utilize to teach a session. This paper presents a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to RDM instruction using currentliterature and the authors’ insight on their own recent course. Reviewing the successes andlessons learned from credit classes, seminars and workshop styled courses provided guidance forthe creation of a 3
