transitioning from industry to academia, based upon the recent experiences of surveyedfaculty who have completed this transition successfully. This preliminary work is intended toseek feedback that will be helpful for expanding this work to a more extensive survey of facultythat fit this category. The most obvious challenge is the adjustment to teaching rather thanworking in an engineering production, design, or consulting environment for industry. However, the information presented here includes a myriad of challenges beyond teaching, includingdeveloping an academic research program through direction of graduate work, and satisfying thevarious professional development, service, and research requirements expected of universityprofessors [1, 2].The three

formal pathwayis through technology education. With only about 30,000 teachers nationwide, however, and only one-third of states requiring students to take such courses by high school 12 ,technology education cannot at this time be considered a mainstream subject in U.S.education. Aspects of technological literacy, especially the element of design thinking, can be included in efforts aimed at introducing K-12 students to engineering. ProjectLead the Way (www.pltw.org) may be the largest and best known of these initiatives, butthere are many others that are having an impact. In post-secondary education, technological literacy has been the stated or implied goal of STS (science technologysociety) programs, and programs on the history and philosophy

It is not a design class, but usesmany of the ideas from architecture and design pedagogy.Physical Space: The studio space for ModSim follows best-practices for design studios, featuring an abundance of open space and good lighting [1]. Students have a clearunderstanding of the courses they need to complete at PIT and courses they can complete inaddition to their associates degree that will help them advance to junior level upon transferringto the University. If the students come to Drexel University as full-time students, they can alsotake advantage of one six-month co-op cycle before graduation. This partnership format does notrequire additional resources, since students are coming to Drexel and using the already existingstate-of-the-art laboratories. In addition, the AET faculty

A possible alternative explanation is thatinstitutions with a greater commitment to sustainability have different admissions or financial aidpolicies that result in admitting more diverse students into engineering and/or systems to supportthese students to successful graduation. Research could be conducted to ask female students ifthe sustainability of the institution overall and/or the courses available impacted their collegeselection decision. The demographics of students enrolled in ME elective courses with stronglyvisible sustainability, such as Renewable Energy, Sustainable Energy, and Global Developmentcourses, could provide
